Issue of constructing Govt. Residential Accommodation for government employees

NEWS ITEM

The Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has demanded construction of government residential accommodation on the same land/site on dismantling of existing buildings so as to tide over the shortage of entitled residential accommodation for the employees working under the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.  In a letter sent to the Chief Secretary, A & N Administration recently,  Shri D. Ayyappan, General Secretary of the Association  said that  there is a tendency on the part of the authorities to hand over the land where government quarters existed, to Municipal Council, etc.  for other purposes. Lodging the Association’s strong protest against this attitude on the part of the authorities, he said that it is against the interests of government employees.   He cited a letter sent to the Assistant Secretary (Housing & Estate), A & N Administration from the Executive Engineer, Port Blair North Division, APWD, Port Blair in which it was stated that 8 Nos. type II quarters bearing No. DP -9 to DP -12 and DP 13 to DP-16   located on AIR Road, Delanipur are to be dismantled to facilitate for developing the land as Parking Space.  While four quarters have been got vacated, the occupants in the remaining four quarters are being compelled to vacate it.

The Association further brought to the notice of the Chief Secretary that hundreds of government employees are waiting for allotment of residential accommodation from the general pool of the Administration. There is acute shortage of government residential accommodation at the main areas of Port Blair town like Junglighat, Goalghar, Delanipur, etc. Since most of the government offices are located at the above places or nearby areas, government employees prefer to get accommodation at these areas and hesitate to occupy accommodation at distant places like Nayagaon, Prothrapore, etc, he said.    The Association sought the intervention of the Chief Secretary in the matter and urged him to restrain the authorities from handing over of land where government quarters existed, to other agencies.
